Settled in 1787
The town of Owego was first settled in 1787 and has a long history as the Tioga County seat. It was very prosperous during the 19th century and many of the majestic homes along the Susquehanna River remain to this day. Back in the 1950s, IBM and the ENDICOTT-JOHNSON SHOE COMPANY among other companies were the major employers and made a great
financial mark on the community. When these companies moved out during the 1980s and 1990s, the town suffered financially but recently, there seems to be a remarkable comeback. Click on the website link and see what’s going on. Hopefully, the “recession” won’t have a serious impact on future plans for improvements and renovations. I have always been amazed at how many people come from this area of “upstate” New York. My father used to say that Owego was a “good place to be from.” It looks like things are changing for the better and hopefully, the town will once again enjoy the prestige and prosperity it had during the 19th century.
