Coolest Small Town

Parades

Owego IS small town America. There are parades with the various groups, including schools, American Legion, VFW, Elks, and on Memorial Day and Flag Day, there are ceremonies recognizing our patriotic citizens who have defended the country. Del Sibley of Owego is at the bottom of Pearl Harbor on the Arizona; and he is remembered every Memorial and Veteran's Day, as are the other deceased Owego Veterans. The parades always include the fire departments tossing candy to the kids on the sidelines. The smell of chicken barbecue fills the air. During the late summer, En Plein Air is a walking tour of the beautiful Victorian homes of Owego, exhibiting the work of local artists. In December, there is a tour of the inside of the homes. There are concerts at lunch time in the court house park, and on Wednesday evenings in the Hickories park, a great camping experience. O Tannenbaum (at Christmas time) features trees decorated by the local merchants with their products and auctioned off. In short, the town is ALIVE. And yet the history is incredible. Robert's Rules of Order were written here, and Belva Lockwood, first woman candidate for US President lived here (p.s. she didn't make it!). The courthouse has 4 towers, each different. People have already talked about the Strawberry Fest, but there is so much more that makes Owego super-cool. It is the home of the new presidential helicopter, Marine One, and the LAMPS system, (see Hunt for Red October, where Jack Ryan flies out to the sub). If you would like to learn more about Owego, there have been several books written about this fantastic, cool village, where "everybody knows your name."
