Best Kept Secret
Owego has always been the best kept secret in the nation! The village has a rich history. The tunnels and secret compartments in homes in the village from the Northern Railroad helping escaping slaves during the civil war. The former residence of the Moravian printing press and one of the nation's first woman's seminary found their home in Owego. One of
the best country bakery's anywhere Everybody's Country Store has the most delicious cheese danishes and iced molasses bars, cakes, cookies, and pies! The people are genuine and friendly in Owego. They support their local high school Owego Free Academy sports teams with passion! It's a place where people call you by your first name and stop and have a chin wag with you on the street. The different sections of Owego are also part of the charm as you talk to a local. there's; Turtle Town near Brick Pond, The Flats, Canawanie, The Heights, King's Point although more recent define some of the main areas of the small town. The quaint movie theater which is the original theater in town is a fantastic experience to see yesteryear as you catch a recent flick from Hollywood. The clock tower on the firehouse, the different pizza places all with a touch of the Mom and Pop shop feel in town. Mario's being my personal favorite as well as Original Itialian Pizza's homemade sub's. Hiawatha Island is a unique place and even boasted a hotel at one stage in history. The best park in the state Hickories park is a great place to take a walk, launch a canoe in the Susquehanna river, watch the river go by near the huge hickory trees still located near the river bank, or throw a ball around. I am proud to say that Owego is my hometown and even though life's journey has taken me away from the USA at times and I reside in another small town beautiful location, Owego with its exceptional charm and friendly appeal wins in my opinion hands down!
